The Story Behind the “Merci Beaucoup” Market Tote

The Story Behind the “Merci Beaucoup” Market Tote

How did the Merci Beaucoup Market Tote end up on Pardon My French?

It all started about five years ago, just before the pandemic. I was visiting Aspen, CO, and wandered into a little shop in town. There it was — this exact tote. being a huge lover of Paris and all things French, I had to have it.

I bought it on the spot. Since then, I’ve received countless compliments on it — and yes, I STILL use it regularly! It’s held up beautifully, and it always brings a little French flair to my day.

So, when I decided to start my e-commerce shop, I knew I wanted to curate items that felt distinctly French — pieces I’d buy if I were in Paris or that would transport me there in spirit. This tote was the perfect fit.

What I love most about it is that it’s not only stylish and functional — it’s meaningful. Each bag is handmade in Bangladesh by working mothers who are paid Fair Trade wages and receive annual profit dividends and a retirement fund through the Bangladesh Project.

After the 1971 war for independence left Bangladesh grappling with poverty and disease, Saidpur Enterprises was founded in 1976 to help mothers of malnourished children by creating employment through jute handicrafts. Today, it supports skilled artisans and provides literacy classes, nutrition education, financial training, and resources about women’s legal rights.

As a woman-founded brand, this matters deeply to me. This tote isn’t just a pretty accessory — it’s a piece that empowers women, supports families, and makes a difference.
